A local skate enthusiast Josh Burt hosted a roll-in challenge for a bunch of friends. The task was simple. A first try roll-in at each spot gets you a point. A switch roll-in gets you an extra point. The person with the most points wins.
Here are some photos from the event held on this last Sunday’s Go Skateboarding Day. We skated all around downtown Portland that day, hitting up various drop-ins from fun to scary.
We started around PSU and ended up hitting mostly SW Portland spots, which seems to have quite a few roll-in opportunities.
Drop-ins, though not counted in the tally, were noted as bad ass. Here is a picture Skip Marcotte took of Mark Frydrychowski dropping in on one of the gnarliest I’ve seen with my own eyes. He snapped his tail upon landing and still rolled away.
After Mark broke his board dropping the yellow floating bank of death, we skated over to Hot Lips Pizza and then drove over to Rip City Skates to buy a new short board. After so many roll-ins it was time to go to some other kinds of spots on this Go Skateboarding Day. So next we skated our spot Jimi Hendrix by the Albina Max stop as well as this spot off MLK.
Did I mention it was Go Skateboarding Day?
Next, we headed over to a spot Skip knew about and a gnarly drop-in was there for only Casey and Mark to do. Everyone else was too beat and intimidated. We had a little ceremony and congratulated each other for not getting hurt and avoiding any unnecessary salt and pepper if you know what I mean…
Here is the final tally.
So Mark Beat all of us doing every single possible roll-in, I think. Casey came very close with his switch abilities. And I (Jon) also was up there with the most switch roll-ins. Josh inched out Billy just barely and Skip had fun rolling many of them. Mikey met up with us at one point and rolled around with us a bit.
I think everyone still hurts a little after all that skating. I know Casey and Mark are on a camping trip and will soon be skating Orcas Island among other Washington parks once they recuperate from the Roll in pain. Josh will be hitting up parks on the east coast and Larch Mountain is this Sunday. Sign up if you haven’t

Kudos to Mark for winning the Roll-in Challenge 2!
I gotta start working on my switch roll-ins…
DAMN, that looked like fun!
Wish I could’ve been there but Daddy needs money. Lets try for another one in the fall. I’ll shuttle.
SICK PICTURES JON! And awesome write up, that was the gnarliest skating I’ve done in a while!
sick skate work , have fun at larch !!!!
Nice work, Jon! Awesome time! Thanks a lot Josh and everyone!
Assuming the upload doesn’t fail, this should be watchable around noon tomorrow.

[...] do to be popular on the Skateboard Interwebs around here? I’ve even got a spot lined up. PDX Downhill has the photos and a rather long-ish video from this year’s participants. They start out on [...]
nice snaps! shit that looked like fun!
Great video you guys!
Awesome photos and video. And fucking awesome sticker! I hate bikes so much. In NYC we have a serious bike-punk hippie problem, but I’m sure it is so much worse in Portland. Keep ripping!
I wouldn’t say it is a problem here. Most of us at pdx downhill are also cyclists. I know the type of cyclists you are referring too and they can be a little… pretentious, at times.
