Yesterday the Salem Longboarding crew (www.salemlongboarding.org) had their first outlaw race The Construction Zone: Battle for Box Canyon. The road was nestled in the hills of Salem among plots of land waiting to have houses built. Very few cars rolled through and the cops never showed up (woohoo!).
About 30 skaters showed up and raced through the sharp corners of Box Canyon Road. There were a few spills but nobody was seriously injured (see photo below). Many people were riding fast and the competition was very tough. After a few heats of racing the number of riders dwindled down and Casey, Billy (myself), Peter and Ryan were left in the finals. Once Casey had removed his pants the final heat took off and the final placings were Billy, Casey, Ryan and Peter.
After a quick award ceremony there was a prize raffle with assorted good donated by Longboard Larry, Eastside, and Rip City (sorry if I am forgetting other companies). The organizers did a very good job with the first outlaw race and I am anxious to check out the next one.
Cory Poole sent me a few photos that he took during the race.
Thanks Cory for the pics!
